Matsushima Town
Matsushima Bay, one of Japan's three great views — 260 pine-covered islands.

Cruising the 260 Islands of Matsushima Bay
Matsushima is counted among Japan's three most scenic views, thanks to some 260 pine-topped islands scattered across the bay. Sightseeing boats loop the bay in about 50 minutes, passing sculpted rocks like Niojima, Kanejima, and the Twin Islands.
On land, the famous 'Shidaikan' four viewpoints — Sokan, Reikan, Ikan, and Yukan — each frame the bay differently. Pair the views with a visit to Zuiganji, the ornate national treasure temple built by the Date clan, and the adjacent Kanrantei tea house.
The town has fully bounced back since 2011: the waterfront is now lined with cafes and souvenir shops, all within easy walking distance. From Sendai it's about 25 minutes by train — a perfect day trip.
Matsushima Oysters: Winter's Crown Jewel
Matsushima Bay is prime oyster country. The islands soften the waves and the nutrient-rich water produces small but intensely flavorful oysters.
From October through March, oyster huts along the waterfront serve all-you-can-eat grilled oysters. Outside the season, steamed oysters, fried oysters, and oyster rice bowls keep the town's favorite shellfish on menus year-round.
Beyond oysters, try conger eel rice bowls, sasa-kamaboko fish cakes you grill yourself, and zunda sweet-bean desserts — all within a short stroll of the boat pier.
