Naha City
The heart of the Ryukyu Kingdom — sun, sea, and smiles.

Shuri Castle and Kokusai Street: Where Ryukyu's Past Meets Its Present
Naha was the capital of the Ryukyu Kingdom for 450 years. Shuri Castle, its symbol, is being rebuilt after the 2019 fire — and the 'visible restoration' lets visitors watch a castle being reborn, an attraction in itself.
Kokusai-dori is the city's lively face: a 1.6 km strip of souvenir shops and restaurants. Duck into the side streets for the old market arcades of Heiwa-dori or the pottery studios of Tsuboya Yachimun Street.
Naminoue Beach sits inside the city, and the Yui Rail monorail makes the whole town easy to explore. Museums, memorials, and island-side parks fill the gaps between food stops.
Okinawa Soba and Chinsuko: Ryukyu Food Culture in Naha
Okinawa soba is the island's soul food: wheat noodles in a bonito-pork broth topped with soki spare ribs or three-layer pork. Every cafeteria does it differently — that's half the fun.
Around Kokusai Street and Makishi Public Market you'll find sea grapes (umibudo), goya champuru, taco rice, and sata andagi donuts. At Makishi Market, buy fish downstairs and have it cooked upstairs — a famous local trick.
The classic sweet is chinsuko, a crumbly cookie from royal-court days. Pair it with beni-imo purple sweet potato tarts or Okinawan zenzai for dessert.
